Bus Carrying Journalists Hit By Gunfire at Rio Games

The first Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro have been rocked by violence before and during the Games. A bus carrying journalists was shot at as it made its way from the Olympic Games basketball venue to the main Olympic Park. The incident happened on a highway between the two venues.

According to witnesses, three journalists required immediate medical attention after sustaining cuts by the flying glass. The driver of the bus did not stop until he encountered a police vehicle.

The police spokesman in Rio speculated that it was not a bullet that hit the bus but it could have been a rock. The terrified passengers in the bus said they heard two shots hit the bus. Images circulating show an index-finger-sized hole made by one of the projectiles. This incident follows one that happened in the equestrian center media room where a bullet missed journalists by a whisker. According to reports, gangs in the nearby favela were shooting at a camera on a police blimp and not the media center.

Gang wars and related crime escalated in Rio days before and during the Olympic Games with a shootout at the Red Line Expressway where a shooter took aim at vehicles. Similar crimes by gangs during the Rio Olympic Games include drug trafficking-related crimes, multiple carjacking where the criminals took the motorists hostage and used the victims' bank cards to withdraw money and then set them free, while others were not so lucky.

The Olympic Games in Rio has brought in over 12,000 of the best athletes in the world for this event. Despite the violence that has rocked the games, all the disciplines were ongoing as planned, and the Olympic spirit was still at its best in Rio and across the world.
