Dormitory fire in Thailand kills 18

Late on May 23rd, a Monday night, a tragedy occurred in the primary school dormitory and kindergarten on the outskirts of Chiang Rai in Thailand. A fire surprised the students, ranging from 5 to 12 years of age. Many of these girls had gone back to sleep after the alarm was initially raised thinking it was merely a prank. Some survivors of the disaster managed to make ropes of bed sheets and climb to safety, but the fire took 18 lives and injured 5 more.

Firefighters put out the fire after 3 hours, dealing with multiple severe injuries along with the fatalities. Much was done by others within the dormitory to alert and assist as many as possible, but the losses are still astronomical creating for one of the saddest tragedies in recent years.

It alerts many to be more concerned with fire safety. If any good can be found in such an event, it is that it may save and alert others down the line who might not actively consider such a threat as fire is largely a silent killer, but one that takes a chilling amount of lives. No one expects a fire, but we can all take steps to try to remain more vigilant to the possibility and continue to respect its lethality. Make sure that you have a plan in case a fire occurs. Check the battery of your smoke detectors; they may just save your life one day.
