Multiple car bombs in Syria May 23

On May 23rd, multiple bombings in Jableh and Tartous along the Syrian coast caused deaths totalling 140 or more. Responsibility for the tragedies was claimed by Islamic State, notably known as ISIS (full name Islamic State of Iraq and Levant - or Syria) a group recognized widely for filming and releasing videos of beheadings, mass bombings, shootings, among many other barbarous war crimes. Islamic State has also taken responsibility for mass shootings in Tunisian museums and resorts, as well as mass attacks within Yemen, Lebanon, France, Turkey, and Belgium among others.

The May 23rd attacks added heavily to the death tolls in the conflicts as this particular attack seemed aimed at civilians, and was plotted with large concentrations as the focus.

Ban Ki-Moon, U.N. Secretary General, condemned the attacks, expressing concern for heightened activity targeting civilians in the area. Vladimir Putin, representing Russia, a country heavily invested in the Syrian civil war, offered his condolences for the damages done. A resoundingly powerful message came from Omran al-Zoubi, Syrian Information Minister, stating that “We will use everything we have to fight the terrorists.”, and “We will not be deterred.” This message will embolden many to continue fighting heinous mass violence and cease this string of crimes of war against humanity. In support, the Deputy State Department spokesman Mark Toner promised that their coalition would “...defeat Daesh so that it can no longer brutalize those who reject its tormented world view.” With this sense of support for victims and others affected by the attacks, the world tries to cope with the losses and work as one to fight any future attacks.
