Sanders' stand on free trade with China

Sanders' stand on free trade with China

Each time Sanders is asked about free trade with China, he has always shown his point of view as being opposed. He believes that any trade that makes companies move abroad is not beneficial to the American worker.  In his own words, “I understood what the function of NAFTA, CAFTA, PNTR with China, and the TPP is, it's to say to American workers, hey, you are now competing against people in Vietnam who make 56 cents an hour minimum wage.”

Sanders voted against all forms of free trade, not only PNTR with China, but also NAFTA and CAFTA. He argues that working people understand how these trade agreements have caused many Americans to lose their jobs.

Just to make historical account of all the ways Sanders has opposed free trade (unlike Clinton), let’s remember some of his votes:

-In 1993, Sanders opposed the North American Free Trade Agreement. This agreement has caused a decline in American economy. Bernie Sanders denounced it back when it was proposed.

-Fast Track authority allowed the President to negotiate free trades without Congressional amendment. Sanders voted not to grant it in1998.

-Since 1999, Sanders opposed calling China a “Most Favored Nation (MFN)”, which allowed a free trade agreement with the Asian giant. This status for China has caused America´s deficit to increase dramatically.

One of Sander’s campaign points has been his position regarding China, one of the world’s fastest growing economies. He has vowed to end this free trade agreement that, according to his analysis, has not brought anything but disadvantages to the American worker. He believes that it is not fair for workers in America to compete against foreign workers with lower labor costs.

His standpoint is that these trade agreements do favor American corporations but greatly affect the American people negatively.
