Scott Joseph Kelly is an American astronaut, engineer, and retired U.S Navy Captain. Kelly has been sent on three space missions.
In 2012, Kelly, along with a Russian astronaut, Mikhail Korniyenko, were selected for a year-long mission to the space station. These two astronauts returned home to Earth on March 1, 2016 and landed safely in the desert of Kazakhstan. They were immediately taken for physical and scientific testing.
Scott Kelly is the first American to spend a year in the space. He has spent total of 520 days in space, 340 days in the recent tour and the remaining from previous space missions. He shared some of the photos from the space through social media. He has witnessed some of the spectacular views of Earth during this mission, such as the Northern Lights passing over the Bahamas and watching huge hurricanes like Patricia.
Kelly spoke about the Earth’s climate where the Earth is covered with pollution and the unexpected evidence of climate change. He also added that changes can be made to save the planet and it is possible to do so.
Kelly and Korniyenko conducted studies and tests to help NASA understand the effects of extensive stay in space on the human body, especially the eyes, bones, brains, muscles etc. This study would help future astronauts who will venture in space.
Kelly has maintained a personal journal and is planning to share all the experiences that he had while on the space station. Kelly also added that the space station is an incredible science facility and many people need to have this opportunity in the future. Kelly’s mission has not come to an end as NASA will spend more time on the tests he conducted during the mission.
